Our animal hospital provides core vaccinations for dogs and cats. All dogs should receive the combined DHPP shot. This shot protects against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza. Depending on your pet’s lifestyle, we may also recommend the leptospirosis and bordetella vaccinations. For cats, the feline core vaccination series is the FVRCCP vaccine (feline viral calicivirus, chlamydia and panleukopenia). Some cats may also benefit from vaccination against Feline Leukemia. Our veterinarian works closely with pet owners to ensure dogs and cats receive the right pet vaccinations for their wellness needs.

Pet vaccinations protection does not last forever. Just like with human vaccines, pet vaccines require boosters to remain effective. Without up-to-date protection, an ordinary trip to the dog park could turn deadly for your pet if your pet contracts a contagious illness. Many of these diseases, including distemper, do not immediately cause symptoms. Consequently, it is possible for a pet to appear “healthy” even though it is sick. Updated vaccinations are the best line of defense. Pet booster shots are typically administered every one or three years. The vaccination schedule is determined by our veterinarian and the vaccine manufacturer, and may vary from pet to pet.

The state of Florida requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies. The best rabies treatment is prevention! By law, all dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months of age must be vaccinated against rabies. Scheduling pet booster shots provides ongoing rabies protection. Rabies is a serious and deadly illness that is easily preventable. All pets – including indoor cats – must be vaccinated. Puppies and kittens should receive a series of vaccinations to protect them from illness while their immune systems develop. The puppy/kitten vaccination series typically begins at 6 – 8 weeks of age. Pet vaccine boosters are administered every 3 – 4 weeks until 16 – 18 weeks of age. Your pet’s specific vaccination schedule may vary based on when your puppy or kitten begins the vaccine series.

Pet vaccinations are safe, effective and save lives. Just like with any medicine, in extremely rare cases an allergic reaction may occur. However, the vast majority of pets have no problem with veterinary vaccinations. In fact, there is a far greater risk that an unvaccinated pet will become sick with a preventable disease than the risk of an allergic reaction.
